Adult Prizes & Redemption

Posted by PIA Product team on Dec 7th 2019

“Redemption Centers are no longer catering solely to children!” That was a frequent theme echoing the aisles and seminars of the 2019 IAAPA EXPO held recently in Orlando, FL. In the 1950’s and 60’s it was common practice to offer items such as ashtrays, tools, or housewares to arcade winners. Adult prize selections were the norm as families spent time with their friends entertaining, and playing arcade games.

Times have changed! In today's arcade and redemption centers, the world of family entertainment offers items like candy, stuffed animals, and novelty toys. Prizes are designed to capture the attention of children who walk away happy with their winnings. But, what about Mom or Dad? Yes, of course they are satisfied knowing their child has won a small toy but what if there could be more? More to offer? More to play and compete for? More of a reason to bring people back again and again?

During our conversations with various FEC operators at IAAPA, we realized and reaffirmed that a subtle, but deliberate shift in prize selection is occuring. Operators are now using counter space for higher value items. Eye catching, name brand, and functional consumer products are beginning to take more and more shelf space. Product locations on planograms, once held for lesser quality, off-brand toys that could easily break are now becoming showcased real estate for adult items. These are products that Mom or Dad, or the entire family will play for, use, and enjoy together. The ashtrays of yesteryear are the name brand Bluetooth speakers, coffee makers, tablets, TV’s, and games of today. Adult orientated, quality items have value and are a great reminder of a wonderful, fun experience.

This change in prize strategy has re-emphasized the “FAMILY” in Family Entertainment Centers! Offering products not only for children, but also catering to adults and all ages in between are bringing families back for more. They save their tickets or point credits while visiting multiple times to play for and win that high value item. Providing a speaker, TV, or other consumer product that is the same brand and quality available at retail stores drives additional revenue, while enhancing the guest experience. Remember to look for those high quality items to deliver a high quality family entertainment experience!
